Without shadow of a doubt one of the most cost-effective digital marketing techniques is to optimize your content for search engines.
You don’t have to be an SEO expert to apply those techniques. All you need is some patience and persistence.
In a nutshell, Google aims to show its users the most authoritative and relevant results. It determines that mainly based on:
• the number and quality of links leading to the page
• the keywords that have been used on that page
... another 200 ranking factors.
Below are the 6 steps I follow with each piece of content on my site. You can read the summarized version below or check the complete 3,579 word article here.

1. Identify the targeted keywords
Open Notepad (or any other word processing software) and write down all the keywords that are related to your topic. If you are introducing a product think about its features and benefits.
We are targeting what is known as long tail keywords. When you have at least 10 keywords you can move to step 2.
2. Use tools for additional keyword suggestions
Use tools such as Keyword Shitter, Ubersuggest, WordStream Free Keyword Tool and KeywordTool. io for additional keyword suggestions. The last two also give you estimated search volume and CPC if you go premium.
Download all the lists and move all the keywords into a single master list file. You should now have at least a few hundred keywords using these tools.
3. Estimate keyword traffic and competition
For this goal we will use Google Keyword Planner. Import all the keywords and then run it. We are targeting keywords with a fair amount of traffic and not too much competition.
Bear in mind that Keyword Planner shows you stats for “exact match” keywords and the competition factor is based on paid search. So don’t solely rely on these numbers. Take them as rough estimates.
4. Title Optimization
By now you should have a solid list of keywords which you have included in your copy. It’s time to optimize the title for humans... you know, because you are writing for humans, not bots. You want a good click-through rate when your result shows up in the SERPs.
According to some research people prefer:
• 36% Numbers
• 21 % Reader Addressing
• 17% How To
• 15% Normal
• 11% Question
As you can see I’ve implemented this into my title.
5. On-page SEO
Your content is now optimized for search engines. It’s time to look at your page optimization.
Make sure that your chosen keyword is present in the page title, URL and meta description. Including your keywords in the page title and URL makes it easier not only for Google to understand what your page is about, but also for its users.
Any mentions of the keyword in the URL or meta description are shown in bold. Skimmers will notice your content more easily this way.
A great tool I would recommend here is Yoast SEO. It will indicate all the necessary criteria you need to meet for your content to be optimized.
Finally, make sure that your title and URL are short. Another study showed that most of the pages on page 1 of the SERPs have short URLs.
This may be because the content doesn’t get cut off in the middle and users can understand what your page is about quicker.
6. Off-Page SEO
Once you produce the content strive for obtaining as many quality backlinks as possible. Preferably those will be from sites in your niche.
Backlinks tell Google that your content is worth showing up in the results page. Backlinks are very much like a vote… or a Like.
Make sure those links are dofollow (or just links). Nofollow links don’t pass any link juice so you won’t benefit nearly as much.
Install NoFollow extension, which will highlight the nofollow links. Next time you are browsing the web keep an eye out for dofollow links. If a webmaster is linking in this way ask him whether you could write a guest post which then links to your site.
The most simple and effective way to constantly get backlinks is by being consistent in producing high-quality content. In the beginning you will have to do some outreach, but after a while the backlinks will start rolling in automatically.
Become an authority in your industry and you will never be short of quality links pointing to your site.Special Offer:
